SERVICE station operator Topaz is in talks to take over just under 40 Esso garages across the country.
The company will also win the rights to supply another 60 dealer-owned garages that currently operate under the Esso brand in a multi-million euro deal, it is understood.
A spokesman for Topaz would not comment on the deal, but industry sources said that the talks are close to conclusion. News of the deal first emerged on radio station Newstalk.
Esso currently supplies about 10pc of all the petroleum products used in Ireland.
Its parent firm Exxon Mobil has been trying to sell its Irish operations for some time. Apart from its petrol station network, Exxon also owns a distribution and jet fuel operation, as well as exploration acreage in the sea off Ireland.
