THESE hair-raising styles of Greek monster Medusa and a gruesome Mexican skull princess were all entrants for the Oscars of the hairdressing industry.

The Irish Hairdressing Championships puts more than 250 of the country's best stylists to the test in the most imaginative ways possible. And the stylists used every manner of prop from stuffed birds to wood varnish to achieve their desired look.

The championships, staged at Citywest Hotel, Saggart, consist of 14 categories, ranging from basic skills in Cut and Colour and Blow Dry to the elaborate Full Fashion and Classic Bridal and culminated in a ceremony at the end of the day where the prestigious awards were handed out.

CREATION

Jenna Whelan (28) was the model for 'Midsummer Nightmare' – the creation of Aisling Ryan (27) from Urban Hype salon in Waterford who said she was inspired by the night sky.

And Lauren Sweeney (19) offered up her head for the 'Victo-rian Secrets' look from stylist Teresa Conroy (23) in Sligo.
