Toddler killed in fall from window

A TODDLER has lost his fight for life after plunging out of a window on the second floor of an apartment block.

The baby boy crawled out of the window in the apartment in Galway and fell to the pavement below.

His distraught mother, who is from Latvia, immediately raised the alarm after the incident happened early on Saturday morning at Lydon Court, Rosemary Avenue, just off Eyre Square.

The emergency services were alerted just before 9.30am and an ambulance and gardai were on the scene within minutes.

The baby, who was 18 months old, was taken to University Hospital Galway before being transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin for specialist treatment.

He underwent emergency care at the hospital but his critical condition deteriorated and he passed away.

A post mortem is due to be carried out.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old Polish man was killed while walking home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood he was struck by a car close to the Woodlawn residential area of Killarney, Co Kerry, at approximately 4am.

It is believed that some of those in the car had earlier been out socialising with the dead man.

Two women who were in the car and who are also Polish nationals, were brought to Kerry General Hospital where they received treatment for minor injuries.

The powerful car struck two walls before knocking down the young man.
