Aidan Gillen will appear on stage at the Abbey Theatre next month as he takes on a major role in a new production of playwright Brian Friel's Faith Healer.

The Dublin actor, who is known for his roles in TV's Game Of Thrones, The Wire, Love/Hate, and Peaky Blinders, is gearing up to take the stage next month as Frank Hardy, a travelling faith healer.

He will star alongside Niamh Cusack, who will play the role of Frank's wife, Grace, and Nigel Lyndsay as Teddy.

Also returning to the Abbey Theatre for the play is director Joe Dowling, who first directed the Irish premiere of Faith Healer 40 years ago.

Dowling said he was "honoured" to be directing the play again four decades on.

"Faith Healer is Friel's masterpiece," he said.

"The complex storytelling, the powerful language and characters and its unique form make it one of the great plays in Abbey history.

"I am honoured to direct it again after all these years with a superb cast and design team."

The directors of the Abbey Theatre, Neil Murray and Graham McLaren, said that it is one of their favourite plays.

The directors have pointed out that the Abbey's production of Friel's spectacular play in 1980 was a moment of great significance for Irish theatre.

The play looks at the character of Frank Hardy, who travels through remote and isolated areas across Scotland and Wales, and offers his unique cure to the most desperate and hopeless of people. Telling the story of Frank, his wife Grace and manager Teddy, the play encounters various differing perspectives of their lives together.

With each tale comes new revelations.

Joe Dowling is also leading a creative team which includes John Lee Beatty (set design), Joan O'Clery (costume design), Sinead McKenna (lighting design), Carl Kennedy (composer and sound design) and Andrea Ainsworth (voice director).
