Third youth in robbery trial

A THIRD youth is to face Circuit Court trial in connection with a gang robbery in which a Brazilian man was allegedly dragged down and beaten.

The 17-year-old has been charged at the Children's Court with robbery of €600 from the man, at Herberton Walk, Dublin, on October 31.

In an outline of the allegations, Garda Kevin Lawless said that a number of youths were involved in the robbery.

"The victim was attacked, dragged to the ground and his pockets run through," he said.

The boy was remanded on bail to appear next month when he is to be served with a book of evidence and sent for trial. Two other youths are awaiting Circuit Court trial in connection with the robbery.

France raids net 19 people

FRENCH president Nicolas Sarkozy says police have detained 19 people in a crackdown on suspected Islamist extremists.

Sarkozy said on Europe-1 radio this morning that weapons were seized in some of the raids, including AK-47 assault rifles.

The raids come after a spate of killings in southern France. Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman who espoused radical Islamist views and said he had links to al-Qa'ida claimed responsibility for the killings. He was killed in a gunfight with police last week.

Farmworkers shot in land row

A UNION leader in Honduras said four farmworkers have been shot and killed in a region torn by a dispute over land.

Farmworkers' union vice president Juan Chinchilla says 11 others were wounded when the group was ambushed late yesterday in the town of Trujillo. The attack came three days after five soldiers were wounded in a confrontation with 30 armed people in the Aguan River Valley.
