Thieves target shops for crime

shop thefts in the Clontarf and Raheny areas of the city have almost doubled when compared to last year.

At a recent Joint Policing Committee meeting, retailers told local gardai that they had noticed a significant increase in shoplifting of late.

Figures presented at the meeting show instances of stealing from shops have risen by 44pc in the area in the first four months of the year.

Between January and May of this year 71 shop thefts have been recorded - a jump from 49 reports last year.

Public order offences in the area were also slightly higher, but criminal damages and burglaries are down.

Cyberbullying and bike theft are being tackled.
