NO exploration of crime in the north inner city can be made without reference to Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch (48) -- the former crimelord who grew up in poverty with Christy Griffin in the 1970s.
While gardai and criminals consider Griffin "pure scum" for his depraved sexual antics and drug dealing, 'The Monk' was never involved in such activities.
'The Monk' has not been convicted of a criminal offence since the 1980s but remains the chief suspect for the Marino Mart robbery in 1997 and the 1996 Brinks Allied raid. The proceeds, more than IR£4m, have never been found.
However 'The Monk' was forced to make a settlement of IR£1.2m to the Criminal Assets Bureau.
With his strong involvement with the Corinthians Boxing Club and other community links, some people consider Hutch a Robin Hood figure, but there are many gardai who would dispute this notion.
But what is not in doubt is that some of his relatives are heavily involved in crime. These include his nephew Gary Hutch (30) -- a key associate of 'Fat' Freddie Thompson who was present when Paddy Doyle was shot in Spain in 2008.
Gary Hutch was given a six-year jail term in 2001 for his role in an armed jewellery robbery in north Dublin.
Nephew Derek 'Del Boy' Hutch is serving jail sentences totalling 15 years for firearms offences, manslaughter and theft.
'The Monk's brother, convicted rapist Derek Hutch, was 44 when he took his own life in 2009. An inquest heard that he was riddled with guilt at the time of his death and is even understood to have approached gardai and admitted killing a south Dublin man in 1992.
