TESCO Ireland has poached a senior executive from Aldi.
Malachy O'Connor, a buying director at Aldi, will make the move immediately.
He will have a senior role and will report to Ireland commercial director John Paul O'Reilly.
The defection comes months after a major management shake-up at Aldi's Irish arm, and as Tesco struggled with a sales crash worth hundreds of millions of euros that was driven by impaired consumer spending and discounters' prices.
Tesco's market share in Ireland fell to 26.2pc in the 12 weeks to January 5, while Aldi's jumped to 7.1pc, and Lidl's to 6.4pc.
Mr O'Connor's appointment at Tesco might give it a better understanding of how to combat the threat from the discounters.
