A 15-year-old boy is recovering in hospital today after a stabbing attack in Naas that left him with a suspected punctured lung.
The youth was attacked in broad daylight at Monread Park in the Kildare town.
The young victim is believed to be from the area and was rushed to Tallaght Hospital after the brutal attack.
Locals in the suburban area outside the town said they were shocked at the attack.
The incident happened close to the Sallins Road junction with Monread at around 3.30pm on Saturday.
A section of the roadway was sealed off by gardai and bloodstains were visible on the roadway.
A second scene on a nearby green area was also cordoned off by gardai investigating the attack.
A forensic examination of the area was carried out by members of the Garda technical bureau.
Immediately after the attack friends of the youth raised the alarm and the emergency services were contacted.
"It's an awful thing to happen in what is usually a quiet area," said local Labour councillor Ger Dunne.
"The levels of violence we are seeing these days in society is shocking. It's terrible to think that somebody could use a weapon to stab someone in broad daylight," he added.
It is believed a knife was used in the attack.
While the teen's injuries are not life threatening Garda sources are investigating the incident as a violent assault.
