Shocked onlookers watched in horror as an 18-year-old man was chased and then savagely attacked with a baseball bat in west Dublin.
Officers from Ballyfermot Garda Station were last night studying CCTV of the attack which started at Le Fanu Road and then spilled into a café.
The teenager was walking on the street yesterday when he was approached by a lone assailant who struck him a number of times with a baseball bat shortly after 10.30am.
The terrified victim, who has an address at Cherry Orchard Avenue in Ballyfermot, ran away from his attacker and into a cafe on the Ballyfermot Road.
The emergency services were then notified and the 18-year-old was rushed to St James's Hospital where it is understood that the teenager received a serious leg injury.
When contacted by the Herald about the incident, an employee at the cafe said: "I can't help you with that."
The man who carried out the baseball attack escaped in a waiting car and sources say that gardai believe the incident was "well planned".
Gardai have not yet established a motive for the attack and no arrests have been made.
Officers said that they were unaware of local reports that dogs had been used to attack the teenager and that there was more than one person involved.
