Teen on stolen bike stopped by gardai

A TEENAGER who stole a bicycle from a shopping centre car park was cycling away when he was stopped by gardai, a court heard.

Christopher Craig (19) also broke the lock on the bicycle.

Judge John Lindsay adjourned the matter to October for a probation report.

The defendant, of Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 8, admitted before Dun Laoghaire District Court to criminal damage and stealing a bike at the car park of Dundrum Town Centre on November 6, 2013.

A garda witness said two men were seen acting suspiciously around a bike rack.

SECURITY

Craig was later stopped cycling the bike and he was identified by security staff as the man who had broken the lock.

The court heard the damage to the lock was €20. The bike was recovered and returned to its owner.

The court heard that Craig has five previous convictions.

Defence lawyer Kim Moloney said Craig started abusing alcohol at only 14-years-old.

Ms Moloney said he was also abusing benzodiazepine tablets in the lead-up to this offence.

She said he is now sober, attending an alcohol awareness course and getting counselling.
