A TEENAGER has been killed and another left seriously injured after the car they were travelling in hit a wall in the early hours of this morning.
Steven Carney (18), from Kennedy Park, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, died in the single-vehicle crash that occurred at 1.55am on the Birr Road outside the town.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital where a post mortem will be held at a later stage.
The 16-year-old passenger was seriously injured and rushed to Limerick Regional hospital for treatment.
Local councillor Denis Ryan said the community was in shock. He told the Herald the Carneys are "well-known in Roscrea – a really nice family – great characters. You wouldn't want to see this happen to anybody.
"I'm very sorry for the family. They're a very popular, decent family in this town."
Gardai in Roscrea are carrying out investigations.
The scene was preserved to facilitate a garda forensic collision examination and road diversions were put in place.
