Teen crushed in horror city lorry smash battling for life

A 19-YEAR-OLD teenager is still battling for her life in hospital after a horrific accident in which she was crushed under a lorry.

The teenager suffered severe leg injuries when the truck hit her in the Dame Street area of the city at around 7am on Saturday.

A taxi driver who witnessed the incident said: “I could see the girl just stepping out and the brakes screeched on and then there was a bang.”

He had been driving along George’s Street and had just turned left on to Dame Street when the accident happened.

“I knew it was bad. The driver got out and saw what had happened.

“He had a breakdown. He had to be sedated by the ambulance men. All I could see was blood and her legs.

Upsetting

“But that was the last thing, I couldn’t look at it. It was very upsetting for everyone.

“It’s probably the worst thing I’ve seen in years of doing this job,” he added.

Other witnesses said the teenager was walking up and down the street after a night out with friends.

Gardai had been called to an unrelated disturbance on Dame Street and arrived close to the scene just as the young girl was knocked down.

The emergency services were called immediately and the teenager was taken to St James’ Hospital in a critical condition.

There was no change in her condition last night.

Witness Niall Harbison said on Twitter: “Day put into perspective when you see a person’s jacket lying under a huge truck on Dame Street.”

Gardai at Pearse Street station have launched an investigation into the accident and have appealed for witnesses.
