Nine people, including a juvenile, were arrested after gardai busted a cannabis growhouse in Dublin's north inner city.

More than 800 plants with an estimated street value of €640,000 were discovered when officers raided a commercial premises in the capital.

Gardai said the operation was intelligence-led and targeted organised crime groups involved in the dealing and supply of controlled drugs.

A total of four people were arrested at the growhouse while five arrests were made in Wexford on Saturday following more searches.

The investigation involved members of the South Eastern Region and detectives attached to the National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

An Irishman and woman were detained as well as one from the UK and six Portuguese.

Those arrested are aged from 17 to 45 and were held for questioning at different garda stations.

Three of those arrested are due to appear in court this morning, while two have been released without charge. Four remain in garda custody.

National and local garda units have uncovered several different growhouses across the country in recent years, including in Kerry, Longford, Kildare and Offaly as well as Dublin.

Last year gardai discovered cannabis worth about €2.7m when they uncovered a growhouse in the Coolock area.

In that operation, a Vietnamese national in his 50s was arrested following a planned search.

Another separate cannabis growhouse was discovered in the Ballymount industrial estate in 2017, which led to drugs with a potential €1.7m street value being uncovered.

In that search, carried out by gardai attached to the Crumlin drug unit, €60,000 of cultivated cannabis and 2,065 plants at various stages of growth were found.

Gardai said the plants would have had a maximum value of €1.6m if they had all been fully mature.

But they added that this was "purely theoretical" to give an idea of the scope of the cultivation enterprise.

Two Vietnamese nationals in their late 50s were later jailed for more than two years.

They were described as having been "gardeners" for the growhouse.
