Taxis blast scheme to ban traffic from centre

A TAXI union has demanded taxis be treated as public vehicles in a scathing submission to Dublin City Council (DCC) on new transport proposals.

The council and the National Transport Authority (NTA) recently published plans for the city centre that would, among other measures, ban cars from the College Green area.

However, the proposals have outraged taxi drivers.

The National Private Hire & Taxi Association have penned a strong submission to the council and said that the plan was "flawed and biased".

"We demand we are considered an equal partner to other public service transport providers. Taxis are not private cars."

The council has just announced an extension on the public consultation period on the plans.

Submissions are now invited until August 7.
