Taxi driver on rape charge

a taxi driver has been arrested on the Croatian island of Hvar after being accused of raping an Irish girl.

The 21-year-old alleges she was raped after she asked him to take her home to her hotel from a disco on the holiday island.

Local Croatian police have detained the 36-year-old taxi driver.

He denied the rape when questioned by investigators.

He will now go before an investigative judge in the city of Split who will decide if there is a case to answer.

Pitter-patter of tiny pandas

The UK's only female giant panda has conceived but is not yet technically pregnant, zoo bosses have announced.

Tian Tian was artificially inseminated in April after she and her intended partner Yang Guang failed to mate naturally.

Edinburgh Zoo said that while tests indicate she has conceived, it is not yet known whether she is pregnant as the embryo is not implanted into the womb immediately in pandas.

If all goes well, Tian Tian could become pregnant in 20 to 30 days and give birth in late August.

Smallpox in cupboard

US government workers cleaning out an old storage room at a research centre near Washington made a startling discovery last week - decades-old vials of smallpox packed away and forgotten in a cardboard box.

The six glass vials of freeze-dried virus were intact and sealed with melted glass, and the virus might have been dead, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Man given €37k for potato salad

A MAN who jokingly sought $10 to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad has raised more than $37,000 (approximately €27,000) from a crowdfunding Internet site.

Zack "Danger" Brown, of Columbus, says that he's now considering throwing a huge public potato-
salad party with the money, which started pouring in after his request took on a life of its own.

Six days into the campaign, he has raised money from more than 3,400 backers worldwide.
