Tax man stole fines worth €20k

a revenue official who stole nearly €20,000 from the State over the course of a year has been given a six-year suspended sentence.

Judge Desmond Hogan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that John (Anthony) Kelly was collecting fines from motorists who hadn't paid Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and using it to clear his debts and pay for medical procedures. He said Kelly (41), of Barons Hall Apartments, Balbriggan, Co Dublin has repaid the money and was unlikely to reoffend.
