Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said he still has confidence in Fine Gael TD Sean Conlan despite his arrest in connection to an alleged bar room brawl, which resulted in a man receiving medical attention.

Speaking during Fine Gael's 'think in' at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Limerick, Mr Kenny said that he could not comment on the alleged glassing incident with which Mr Conlan had been linked, but insisted that "the law will take its course".

The Taoiseach said "of course" he has confidence in the Cavan/Monaghan TD who claims he was attacked during the incident in his family bar in Ballybay because he was a member of Government.

Mr Conlan is so far the only person who has be en arrested in relation to the incident in which gardai have said a man in his 20s required medical attention.

"Sean Conlan is an elected member of the Fine Gael party and a Dail deputy.

"He has been selected by his constituency convention to contest the next election, of course I have (confidence in him)," Mr Kenny said.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach moved to play down public expectation ahead of the upcoming Budget, describing the recovery as "fragile".

"The recovery that is clearly underway is fragile, we understand this and people are concerned about it and in that sense, this government is not going to do anything in a populist fashion to disrupt that competent management of the economy."
