Taliban fighters killed in attack

TALIBAN insurgents detonated a truck bomb, then tried to storm an Afghanistan Nato base, but coalition forces repelled the attack, killing 14 militants, officials said.

No foreign or Afghan troops were killed, according to Nato. The blast occurred at a coalition base about 5km outside Khost. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

Police said the attack occurred at Camp Salerno and six civilians -- three women and three children -- were slightly wounded.

'Rockefeller' in insanity claim

LAWYERS for a German man who pretended to be a member of the Rockefeller family say his conviction for kidnapping his daughter should be thrown out because a prosecutor denigrated his insanity defence.

Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who used the name Clark Rockefeller, is in jail in Massachusetts, USA.

At his trial, the prosecutor noted Gerhartsreiter's history of using aliases and urged jurors not to let his insanity claim "be the culminating manipulation in a lifetime of lies".

Gerhartsreiter is awaiting trial in California on a charge of murdering his landlady's son in 1985.

French set to boycott Euros

FRANCE says government ministers will boycott matches held in Ukraine during the Euro 2012 football championship because of the country's treatment of opposition figure Yulia Tymoshenko.

Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron was quoted saying "no member of the government will attend matches in Ukraine" in protest.

Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year jail term on charges of abuse of office, condemned as politically motivated by the West.
