SWAT unit on the streets

Heavily armed members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit are being deployed on the streets of the capital following the recent upsurge in gangland shootings.

The SWAT unit has been providing back-up to patrols and checkpoints in designated areas of the city.

Helmeted members of the units, wearing balaclavas that help protect their identity, have been on back roads in the Finglas, Ballymun, and Coolock areas.

The double-killing in Pearse Street, and the assassination of John Paul Joyce, in Coolock, signalled a rise in the temperature of gangland violence in recent days -- and a further wave of attacks is now feared.
