Surge in online banking

MORE Irish customers have opted to carry out their banking business online as usage surged by 16pc last year.

There are now 2.6 million customers registered in Ireland, and a total of 34.5 million payments were made online last year, according to the Irish Banking Federation (IBF).

Head of card services at the Irish Payment Services Organisation (IPSO) Una Dillon said online banking is facilitating the migration from paper-based payment methods to electronic payments. In the last quarter of 2009 there were 1.4 million mobile top-ups online, up from 1.2 million in 2008.
