One Direction star Niall Horan has rowed-in behind Irish soccer star Stephanie Roche in the bid to help her win the FIFA Goal of the Year award.

The Mullingar native took to Twitter to say he hopes the former Peamount United star wins the title over Robin van Persie and James Rodriguez.

And with 21 million followers, Niall's endorsement of the Bray native could be enough to sway the vote in the online contest.

"What a screamer. Hope Ya win it! I score them in the garden all the time, know exactly how it feels," Niall tweeted to Stephanie.

Vast

The Irish footballer is now hoping that Niall's vast Twitter following will get behind her campaign.

The winner will be announced in Zurich at the D'Or awards on January 12.

Stephanie is up against two other nominations in the final top three.

Her two rivals for the prestigious award include Robin van Persie, who scored a spectacular diving header for the Netherlands against Spain in the World Cup, and Columbia's Rodriguez, who scored a long-range volley against Uruguay in the same competition.

Stephanie now plays for French side ASPTT Albi.
