Start-ups target e600m

THE Government supported the establishment of 73 start-up businesses in 2009, which have pledged to create 900 jobs over the coming year.

Trade and Commerce Minister Billy Kelleher said these companies are expected to generate combined sales of around €600m within the "smart economy".

"The Government is focused on developing Ireland into a 'smart' or knowledge-based economy and, over the last decade, has continued to increase its investment in the generation and exploitation of intellectual property developed in Ireland's higher education institutions," he said.
