SSE win energy contract

AN Irish-based renewable energy company has won the exclusive rights to develop tidal and wave power off the coast of Scotland.

SSE Renewables was awarded the contract by the Crown Estate in Britain to develop 400MW of wave and tidal energy in Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters.

The award is part of the world's first commercial leasing programme of its kind undertaken by the Crown Estate.

Paul Dowling, chief executive of SSE Renewables, said: "SSE is committed to building on our existing portfolio."
