Special needs rape charge

THE main suspect for the rape of a woman with special needs in Dublin's Portobello area has been charged after being arrested for the second time.

The 31-year-old man, who is originally from Pakistan but cannot be named for legal reasons, was held after a dawn raid on a flat in the South Circular Road area on Saturday morning.

He was first arrested last Monday but released on Tuesday.

The victim, a young woman in her early 20s who has Down Syndrome, was attacked on June 12.

ALPS SLAYINGS

A 54-year-old man was arrested today in connection with the murders of three members of a British family and a French cyclist who were shot dead in the Alps in September last year.

Saad and Ikbal Al-Hilli, Mrs Al-Hilli's mother Suhaila al-Allaf, and Sylvain Mollier, were murdered on a remote mountain road near Annecy.

Surrey Police in England said the suspect, who they did not name, was detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. Mr Al-Hilli's brother Zaid Hilli, who is in his 50s and lives in Surrey, has previously denied any feud with his sibling over an inheritance.

2-DAY-OLD BOY FOUND IN DRAIN

A 26-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested in the Spanish city of Alicante on suspicion of attempting to murder her baby, who had to be rescued from inside a building's drains.

The two-day-old boy, who still had his umbilical cord and was found wrapped in plastic bags, could have been trapped for 40 hours at a point where the building's drains converged into a manhole in a courtyard.

A neighbour alerted firemen on Sunday to what was thought to be a meowing cat.

The 4.6lbs boy is said to be in a serious and has a broken bone in one arm.
