Lithuania is removing all the Soviet statues remaining in its capital, Vilnius, prompted by renewed calls to take down the symbols of an oppressive occupation amid the Ukraine crisis.
A spokesman for the mayor's office said the task is expected to last a few weeks. Lithuania began removing hundreds of Soviet-era symbols after it broke away from Moscow in 1990, but four statues remain on the city's Green Bridge.
They depict Red Army soldiers, workers, students and peasants.
