Son (10) faces murder charge

A 10-year-old boy has been charged with shooting his mother dead after authorities said he told a neighbour about the killing.

The boy has pleaded not guilty to murder at a court in Ohio, in the US.

Deborah McVay (46) was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head on Sunday night in Big Prairie, located about midway between Cleveland and Columbus.

Authorities went to the house after a neighbour called a sheriff's dispatcher to say Ms McVay's son had come to her home and said he had just shot his mother.

Tunnel gang robs bank

Thieves dug a 100ft long ventilated and lit tunnel from a neighbouring building into an Argentine bank and emptied the contents of up to 140 safety deposit boxes.

Authorities said three thieves entered a Banco Provincia branch in the Buenos Aires district of Belgrano on New Year's Eve and spent the weekend emptying between 130 and 140 of the branch's 1,408 boxes.

The thieves rented a building next to the bank in June and spent months digging the tunnel.

Cuba launches 10pc jobs cull

The first redundancies have begun in Cuba's programme to axe the jobs of 500,000 state workers.

Cuban state-run media quoted the head of the Cuban Workers Confederation, Salvador Valdes, as saying the initial job culls were occurring in the sugar, agriculture, tourism, health and construction sectors.

The job losses are to affect 10pc of the workforce.

Obama pays graveside visit

US President Barack Obama has ended his nearly two-week Hawaiian vacation on a sombre note, taking his daughters to visit his grandfather's grave.

The president's motorcade wound through the island of Oahu's mountainous terrain on its way to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. The president, along with daughters Malia and Sasha, briefly visited the grave of his maternal grandfather, Stanley Dunham.
