Soldier danced on victim in pub attack

A SOLDIER who kicked and "danced on the face" of another man during a pub row has avoided a jail sentence.

Daniel Carthy (24) punched Christopher Kelly in the toilet of a pub after asking Kelly about his former girlfriend.

Witnesses said that the victim appeared to be unconscious as Carthy got up and kicked him in the head and then slammed a heavy door twice on his head.

Garda Thomas Moore told Cormac Quinn, prosecuting, that one witness saw Carthy dancing on the man's face while he was "out cold".

Carthy, of Edenmore Avenue, Raheny, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at the Station House Pub, Balbriggan, on December 26, 2010.

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Martin Nolan suspended a sentence of three and a half years and ordered Carthy to pay a total of €8,000 to the victim.
