A LEVY on smartphones could be diverted into additional funding for suicide prevention services, Dublin senator Catherine Noone said.

Ms Noone said that a small levy could be placed on smartphone sales to help fund suicide prevention.

By the end of last year, 71pc of the population was expected to own a smartphone.

A similar measure was introduced in France recently to support the arts.

"The issue of suicide and suicide prevention is again in the spotlight in recent days, thanks in no small part to the inspirational message of Cork teenager Donal Walsh," Ms Noone said.

"I think we need to be looking at new ways in which to fund suicide prevention measures."
