A man believed to be engaged in a feud with an associate of the so-called Mr Big of Dublin's crime underworld has been arrested.

It comes after gardai seized a sawn-off shotgun and some ammunition during a raid on the suspect's house on the northside of the city yesterday afternoon.

The man has previous convictions for drug offences including possession of cocaine and cannabis going back a number of years.

The career criminal is also closely linked to a member of a burglary gang that wreaked havoc around the country.

This gang was one of many targeted in a crackdown by Garda Operations Fiacla and Thor.

One such gang was smashed when sentences of between five and 16 years were handed down to seven men in their 20s from north Dublin, who carried out a terrifying raid on a young family causing "catastrophic changes" to their lives.

The raiders were armed with a sawn-off shotgun, a handgun and a machete and threatened to kill the children in the ordeal in Tipperary on November 21, 2013.

A number of detectives in a convoy of cars drove to the man's house yesterday. He opened the door and a search of the property by plain-clothes and uniformed officers commenced.

While some gardai went inside the house, others searched the gardens and some bushes on the street close to the man's house.

The weapon and ammunition were removed for forensic examination and the arrested man was taken to Coolock Garda Station for questioning.

The man is believed to have recently become embroiled in a row with an associate of the man known in crime circles as Mr Big.

The Coolock-based gangster - whose mob are suspected of organising the murder of Real IRA figure Alan Ryan, has previously been the subject of garda attention when three of his drug shipments were seized.

It is suspected that the man arrested yesterday and the associate of Mr Big have fallen out over money or drugs.
