Shatter to face no confidence motion

Justice Minister Alan Shatter is facing a motion of no confidence as the controversy over his failing to complete a breath test rumbles on.

Fianna Fail has tabled the motion, to be debated next week, accusing Mr Shatter (pictured) of hypocrisy after he confirmed he was stopped at a garda checkpoint and failed to complete a breath test blaming his asthma.

The motion will be taken in private members' time on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

However, the Government looks certain to win the vote, with the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and senior colleagues backing the Minister.

The Minister, a TD at the time of the incident in late 2008 or early 2009, released a statement about the matter on Thursday. He did outline how he was involved in the incident at a garda checkpoint but he said he was coming from the Dail and had not been drinking.

However, controversy ensued, as a week earlier Mr Shatter revealed confidential garda information about Independent TD Mick Wallace on RTE's Prime Time.
