Second-home owners about to get hammered

Just when it seemed the brouhaha over the Local Property Tax had died down, spare a thought for those with second homes, whether they be apartments or holiday homes, who never paid the second home tax and are now going to get hammered.

They've been warned that they must pay up, for all years, by June 30, or else. The tax is €200 a year, but a house that hasn't been registered since 2009 now owes a whopping €3,320, once interest and penalties are added on.

So far, 129,480 properties have been registered for 2013. 349,786 property accounts were registered in 2012, so there are plenty outstanding.
