DONATIONS from around the world in honour of murdered Eugene Gillespie will fund a new scholarship.
His childhood friend Declan Foley, who now lives in Australia, set up the fund after hearing of Eugene's death, and within the past ten days over €1,000 has been raised.
Supporters have decided to use the money to fund a gaeltacht scholarship in memory of Eugene, marking his great love of Irish. They will also give a prize in his name at the Sligo Feis Cheoil.
"Eugene did much in his own way to keep the Irish language alive in Sligo," said Mr Foley.
"Irish was close to his heart, and his dictum when it came to purchasing anything he needed was Sligo first, Connacht second and Ireland third," he added.
Mr Foley said he was still receiving calls and messages from people all around the world and has been urged to keep the fund going permanently.
