THOUSANDS of Saorview users may have to spend €250 under plans being considered by the telecoms regulator to change TV frequencies.
Comreg is to decide whether to switch digital Saorview frequencies - a move that would leave around 4,000 homes requiring a new aerial to get the signal. The move is being considered as part of an EU plan to increase capacity for mobile operators.
According to the proposal, Comreg would reallocate frequencies currently reserved for digital Saorview and Saorsat TV to mobile broadband.
While this would save Irish mobile operators an estimated €90m in costs, it would require thousands of households to replace their aerials. All Saorview users would be required to retune their set-top boxes, a process that could lead to further cost.
