Runner dies in half-marathon

A runner has died taking part in a half marathon.

The competitor, who has not yet been named, was running in the Bupa Great Birmingham Run in the English city.

A statement on the organisers website said: "We are sad to inform you that an individual has lost their life today at the Great Birmingham Run.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the person concerned."

They said no further details would be released until next of kin was informed.

Thousands of runners took part in the 13.1 mile event through the city's streets.



Fan is injured



in stadium fall

An American football fan has been critically hurt after falling more than 20ft from an escalator as he exited MetLife Stadium after the New York Giants and Washington Redskins game.

New Jersey police Sergeant Adam Grossman said the 42-year-old man was leaving the stadium in East Rutherford when he fell over the side of the escalator. It is not clear what caused him to fall.

Sgt Grossman said the man fell about 21ft and landed on a metal stage.



Tear gas quells Kuwait demo

Police in Kuwait used tear gas and stun grenades against anti-government protesters defying orders not to stage marches through the Gulf nation's capital.

Demonstrators were allowed to gather outside parliament to protest changes in voting rules for elections set for December 1.

But other groups broke away and staged defiant processions through Kuwait City.



Crash victim is found in plane

Crews in the US Virgin Islands have recovered a body inside the wreckage of a small plane found on the ocean floor.

The US Virgin Islands government said the identity of the passenger recovered will not be publicly identified until relatives can be notified.

The Piper PA-23-250 plane went down a week ago off St Thomas with four people aboard.

One passenger survived the sea crash.
