RTE eyes online fees

RTE is considering introducing fees for a section of its online operations. The State broadcaster is investigating means of increasing its online and digital revenue.

While RTE said it remained committed to providing free access to its "core" offerings on TV, radio and online, it is said to be in the process of defining what this means.

Addressing an IBEC conference yesterday, director general Noel Curran said that the broadcaster was looking at all possibilities to raise revenue. "Free and open access to core RTE content will remain a key part of our digital strategy but just as other public institutions run specific exhibitions and events for which customers pay, so too RTE is considering developing new IP-based premium, live and video-on-demand services," he said.
