Roy will put 'heart and soul' into it – mum

IRELAND'S football 'dream team' has got the ultimate endorsement – from Roy Keane's mum.

Marie Keane said she will be "over the moon" if it is confirmed that her son will be appointed assistant to new Republic of Ireland manager, Martin O'Neill.

But at the same time like everyone else, she is struggling to believe the news.

The extended Keane family hope it will draw a line under the 2002 World Cup controversy and the then Manchester United captain's exit from the Irish camp at Saipan.

Marie Keane (inset), who admitted she was shocked by the depiction of her son in Alex Ferguson's autobiography, said Roy's mooted role in the Irish team is almost too good to be true.

"It would be lovely if it happened. Roy would love it and I know he would do a great job," she said.

"Roy puts his heart and soul into everything he does. He always has. This job would be no different. We would all be so proud of him."
