Return of the soup kitchen only highlights state our nation is in

IS this 1812 or 2012? Because I thought that we stopped opening soup kitchens in this country a long time ago. I was wrong.

One was launched this week in Athlone. It's hard to think of a more emotive symbol of the state this country is now in than a soup kitchen. It generates images of queues of starving, emaciated people, Great Famine victims, pleading for food en route to the poorhouse.

Things may not be as severe as back then but there's no doubt that vulnerable people are literally starving in this so-called First World country in 2012.

And what are the Government serving up next month? Only more austerity.

Expect, then, to see more soup kitchens.
