Retail sales subdued

RETAIL sales in Ireland made a modest recovery last month but shoppers are staying away from big purchases of furniture, lighting and electrical goods.

Overall, the volume of retail sales dropped 0.5pc in July.

And as the scrappage scheme draws to a close, figures excluding car sales fell 2.3pc in July from a year ago.

Bar sales jumped by 3.3pc within the month but overall bar sales are down 0.4pc in the year, according to the latest retail sales figures from the Central Statistics Office.
