TV3's garda advisor for new show Red Rock has a background in serious criminal investigations - including the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.

Ian McLoughlin worked as a guard for 33 years before retiring in March.

He has been involved with Red Rock, which is due to hit screens in January, since the beginning.

The Ballymount broadcaster charged him with making the show as true to life as possible.

He has even contributed story ideas, according to producers.

Mr McLoughlin began his career in 1981 in the Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin city centre before taking up posts in stations across the city.

In the latter portion of his career he was based in Harcourt Square with the National Bureau of Criminal Investigations (NBCI). "I was involved in the serious crimes investigations," he told the Herald.

"That involved investigating all serious crimes such as homicides, armed robberies, kidnappings... crimes of that ilk."

"I was involved in the case of Veronica Guerin, the disappearance of Robert Holohan in Cork, and other high-profile murder cases.

"I might have left the job but I'm still in the club. I'll always be a policeman in the back of my mind until the day I die."

Despite his background in serious crimes, his advisory role with Red Rock is very much focused on everyday policing.

"It's not all mayhem and murder or blood and guts," the Lucan-based man explained.

"There is ordinary day-to-day going-on that guards have to deal with."
