CHAMPION jockey AP McCoy was crowned sports star of the year while Clare hurler Tony Kelly scooped the young sports star title at the Irish Independent sports awards.

The event, organised to celebrate excellence in Irish sport, was held at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin.

Editor-in-chief of the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, the Herald and independent.ie, Stephen Rae was among those who enjoyed the lunch.

He was joined by Irish football head coach Martin O'Neill and assistant Roy Keane. Racing trainer Jim Bolger was initiated into the Hall of Fame, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Magee, Jack Charlton and John Giles.
