FOOTBALLING legend Niall Quinn and his model wife Gillian have put their Kildare home on the market as they look to downsize to something a bit more manageable.

The luxury six-bed Longstone Rath home they built outside Naas nine years ago, complete with tennis court, stables and 33 acres of land, is on the market for €2.5m.

At the time they built it the Quinns had just moved back from the UK following Niall's football career there, and they wanted somewhere that was in the countryside but close to the airport.

The family also wanted space to indulge their love of horses, with Gillian and daughter Aisling riding competition dressage. There are 10 loose horse boxes, a horse walker, all weather arena, and a riding trail around the edge of the grounds.

What they succeeded in building was their ideal home 30 minutes drive from the capital but also near local towns and schools.

Aisling is now going travelling, and Gillian is scaling back on the horse riding and is teaching pilates, so the Quinns want to find something not too far away with a bit less land.

The Quinns described the property as adaptable, with the barn suitable for conversion to other uses.

The land around would be suitable to be rented out to a local farmer.

Niall and Gillian's son Michael makes great use of the floodlit tennis court, but mostly for football practice with his dad.

The house is for sale through Sherry FitzGerald by private treaty.

Its website says Longstone Rath enjoys "a glorious position within a verdant pastoral setting, some four miles from the boutique town of Naas".

"The house links seamlessly with the gardens and pleasure grounds. The gardens are extremely private and secure with electric gates". There is 510sqm (5,500sq ft) of living space.".
