Quarter of dogs at Crufts were 'obese'

There was too much puppy fat on about one quarter of the top dogs at Crufts this year, according to a new analysis that provides more evidence the obesity epidemic is widening to canines.

Researchers analysed nearly 1,000 photos of dogs between 2001 and 2013 that placed in the top five at Crufts. While show dogs are supposed to be ideal specimens, the study authors estimated 25pc of them were too chunky.

The paper was published online Monday in the BMJ journal, Veterinary Record.
