Protesters hit by tar tanker

A tanker truck carrying tar slammed into a toll booth that had been seized by protesting teachers, killing seven people and injuring 14, authorities in Mexico said.

State prosecutors' spokesman Alejandro Arellano said the accident occurred yesterday in Morelia, state capital of Michoacan.

Most of the victims were believed to be teachers whose union has been holding protests in the state.

Union member Jorge Cazares said six victims so far had been identified by colleagues as junior high school teachers.


US AUTHORITIES have recovered 400 handwritten pages from the wartime diary of a key Nazi adviser to Adolf Hitler, following a 17-year search for the documents, officials said.

A man who whipped a Muslim convert as a religious punishment for drinking alcohol has been jailed for at least 16 months in Australia.

Wasim Fayad was convicted earlier this year of the 2011 attack on Christian Martinez.

Magistrate Brian Maloney sentenced Fayad today to a maximum of two years in prison for actual bodily harm.

Fayad whipped Martinez 40 times with an electric cord in his Sydney home while three other men held him down.

Those men received suspended sentences and a community service order.


A CROWDED outdoor deck behind a Miami sports bar collapsed during a basketball game, sending dozens of people into the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.

Miami Dade Fire Chief David Downey said 24 people were taken to hospitals late yesterday, and two were in serious condition.

Authorities said about 100 people were on the deck of Shucker's Bar & Grill when it gave way.
