The number of professional job vacancies increased by almost 30pc last month compared with last year.
But the number of professional candidates has been steadily falling, to 7,400 last month from 9,670 in September last year, according to the Morgan McKinley employment monitor. Morgan McKinley Ireland COO Karen O'Flaherty said the data was further evidence of the growing strength of the jobs market.
"In all professional sectors, from finance to tech, engineering and HR, there has been a spike in vacancies, both compared with this time last year as well as August, which itself was a record month," she said.
But she warned that the number of suitable candidates is failing to match demand.
