Pressies to cost shoppers €430

Irish shoppers expect to spend €430 on Christmas presents this year, with 71pc doing so in the high street or the town centre, according to research carried out by Argos.

Dubliners expect to spend more on presents than people in other cities, with the survey showing they will spend €487 on average. Cork people expect to spend €390 and Galway people will spend €435.

By the second week of December, only 15pc of shoppers had completed their Christmas shopping, leaving the vast majority with a lot left to do.

Just under a quarter said they will either be researching and buying last-minute bargains or reserving online and collecting in-store at a time that suits them.
