Pool car plan gets backing of city council

CITY councillors have signalled their backing for a new plan to increase pool cars in Dublin.

The company GoCar presented a proposal to City Hall which would see a dramatic rise in the level of the service.

And councillors are keen on the plan, which would involve having dedicated on-street car spaces throughout the capital.

However, under existing laws, the local authority is not permitted to set aside spaces for private use.

"They want on-street parking spots dedicated to them ... but the national legislation does not allow us to do that," Labour's Andrew Montague told the Herald.

Mr Montague said the council is in contact with the Department of Transport with a view to having the rules changed.

"The council would like to pursue it, to get it up and running," added the councillor, who is chair of the local authority's transport strategic policy committee (SPC).

In a presentation to the SPC, GoCar said a big attraction of pool cars is the reserved parking in city centre areas.

"GoCars are conveniently located close to where people live or work," it stated. The service operates by offering hire cars for short trips.

"We would like to ask the city council to consider block booking GoCars for use by its staff for work purposes during the working day," the company said.

It added: "We intend to have locations in the vicinity of the Commuter, Dart and Luas stops, in particular Grand Canal Station, Pearse Station, Tara Street Station, Connolly Station, Docklands Station, Harcourt, Museum and Smithfield."

It has been operating in Dublin city since September 1 last with two vehicles at its first car station in a private lot on Pleasants Street, just off Camden Street in Dublin 8.

The cars are low-emission diesel five-door Ford Fiestas.

The company has been operating in Cork city for two years since its launch by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey in September 2008.

Customers reserve vehicles for as little as an hour at a time, using the internet or by phone.

The reservation can be made well ahead of time or with a few minutes' notice. The cars are located at designated parking bays in the local area and are accessed using a smartcard.

GoCars can be hired from €4.75 per hour plus a charge per kilometre.
