Politician's aide fired over traffic jam claims

State authorities are investigating if the move was revenge against the mayor Mark Sokolich, a democrat who failed to endorse Mr Christie for re-election.

OUTRAGED

The governor said he was "outraged and deeply saddened" by the revelations. "We fell short of expectations," he added. "I had no knowledge or involvement in this issue, in its planning or execution."

Mr Sokolich called it "appalling" that the traffic jams appeared to have been engineered. He added that the gridlock put people in danger by holding up emergency vehicles, and called on anyone involved to resign immediately.
