Pierce's Bond car up in flames

Former 007 star Pierce Brosnan's personalised Aston Martin from his Bond days has been destroyed in a fire at his Malibu home.

The metal inscription plates on his 2002 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish are all that survived the blaze. He posted pictures to Instagram of the plates from the hand-built supercar but counted his blessings as no one was hurt. "All that remains... of a very great Aston Martin...she was a beauty... however, a car is just a car... a life, is a precious gift," he wrote.

Mexican drug lord captured

Servando "La Tuta" Gomez, one of Mexico's most-wanted drug lords who terrorised the western state of Michoacan as head of the Knights Templar cartel, has been captured by federal police.

The 49-year-old is leader of the Knights Templar, a quasi-religious criminal group that once ruled all of Michoacan, controlling politics and commerce. He evaded capture for more than a year after the federal government took over the state to try to restore order.

Blogger killed in front of wife

A prominent Bangladeshi- American blogger known for speaking out against religious extremism has been hacked to death as he walked through Bangladesh's capital with his wife.

The attack on Avijit Roy, a Bangladesh-born US citizen, occurred on a crowded street as he and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, were returning from a book fair. Ahmed, who is also a blogger, was seriously injured. It was the latest in a series of attacks on secular writers in Bangladesh.

Books vie for oddest title

A book on advanced research into concrete has been tipped for one of the world's oddest literary prizes.

Readers will be asked to pick a winner in the Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title of the Year 2014 from seven strange publications. They inlcude: Advanced Pavement Research; Divorcing A Real Witch - For Pagans And The People That Used To Love Them; Strangers Have The Best Candy; and The Madwoman In The Volvo - My Year Of Raging Hormones and Nature's Nether Regions.
