An author had an audience with a difference when he launched his new thriller in front of 4,000 emperor penguins.

Explorer and writer Patrick Woodhead unveiled his novel, Beneath The Ice, in Dronning Maud Land in Antarctica.

The book, the author and professional climber's third, is set against an Antarctica backdrop.

Woodhead, who traversed Antarctica east to west in 2002, made light of the world's "most southerly book launch".

"It's the only book launch I've done where everyone turned up in black tie," he said. "There was a lot of queue-jumping at first, but they became orderly.

"Without any competitors, I'm feeling really confident about topping the chart in the Antarctic bestseller lists."

Beneath The Ice is published by Penguin - naturally - on January 1.
